Abstract

The course will focus on microelectronics in sensors applications. After a general introduction of sensing modalities and technologies, basic electronics blocks in sensor systems will be presented. VHDL-AMS will be used during case study analysis. As examples, current and voltage mode ADCs will be discussed. The current and future trends in sensors‘ data processing and visualization will be also presented.

 

Lecture 1:

Key Sensing Modalities:

  • The most commonly used sensing techniques: mechanical, optical, semiconductor, electrochemical sensor, biosensors.
  • Example applications of the sensors.

 

Lecture 2:

Key Sensor Technology Components/ Hardware and Software Overview:

  • Macro components in Sensor Systems- Microcontroller based realizations.
  • Micro components in Sensor Systems- ASIC/SoC/SoP realizations.

 

Lecture 3/4:

A signal chain in a typical sensing application

  • Basic electronic blocks: Analog-Front-End (AFE), Filters, Analog-Digital-converter(ADC)
  • Voltage and Current mode AFE blocks
  • Design and simulation of AFE blocks (VHDL-AMS description language)
  • Current mode sigma-Delta ADC as a part of amperometry based sensors
  • Case Study: ASIC Sigma-Delta ADC implementation in CMOS 65nm TSMC technology
  • Voltage mode Dual-Slope ADC as a part of medical sensor
  • Case Study: Dual-Slope ADC with oversampling and noise-shaping modifications

 

Lecture 5:

What next after the data collecting?

  • Sensors as one of the largest generators of data (Big Data, Cloud based Solutions)
  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Intelligent processing of data and context-based visulaization (Artifical Intelligence, Machine Learning)
