Title: Optimization Methods for Signal Processing

Objective: This course introduces the optimization methods for advanced signal processing. The course covers basic optimization theory, convex optimization theory, optimization algorithms as well as important applications in signal processing (such as imaging, wireless communications, data analysis and machine learning). Students will learn how to apply the theorems as well as programming to solve practical problems. The course is particularly useful for students who wish to improve their capabilities in problem formulation, problem solving and performance analysis.

Outline:

1. (3 hour) Introduction of optimization

2. (3 hour) Gradient/Newton/subgradient methods (Assignment 1)

3. (3 hour) Convex set, convex function and convex optimization problem

4. (3 hour) Geometric program and conic programs (Assignment 2)

5. (3 hour) Duality theory (Assignment 3)

6. (3 hour) Block coordinate descent and primal-dual methods (Assignment 4)

Grading: Assignments (100%) Students will need to program (Matlab) for working out the assignments.
